Sun Star Plant

Sun Star Plant

Sun star plant, (Ornithogalum Dubium), is a South African flowering bulb plant. It can be cultivated in USDA zones 7 to 11 and produces beautiful clusters of bright orange flowers.

Orange Star Plants Growing Tips

Orange star plants are advantageous to grow and are not difficult to maintain. They are compact and rarely grow more than a foot (31cm). They grow taller stems in the spring that produce bright orange flowers.

These flowers bloom for one to three months. Although the bulb will return each spring from its roots, it can become waterlogged and rot quickly.

If your area is sandy or rocky and your home is in zone 7, the bulbs can be overwintered outside. The best idea would be to take the bulbs out of the ground in the fall and then store them indoors until they are ready to be planted in the spring.

If ingested, all parts of the orange star plant can be toxic. These plants should not be grown around children and pets.

Caring for an Orange Star Plant

Taking care of the Sun star plant is relatively easy. Orange star plant care involves maintaining the bulb moist but at the same not overwatered. Sow bulbs in sandy soil with good draining and keep watering regularly.

Sun star plant thrives best in indirect sunlight. Flowers that wilt and fade need to be removed. Once all the flowers have wilted and died, you should remove the flowering spike from the plant’s main body.

Although this may look like too much, do not worry, the plant will survive it.

Be sure, though, not to cut the foliage by accident, continue watering it, and let the process go along.

This will benefit the plant by giving it the chance to build up the energy in its bulb and be prepared for the next growing season.

Sun Star Plant Interesting Facts

Look under a microscope at the seeds of the Ornithogalum dubium flower, and you’ll find a shape similar to that of the Milky Star, designed by Pudelskam.

Crafted from white ceramic, the surfacing units can be used individually as wall hooks or combined as an interlocking, organic design across a larger area.

Each piece allows for a multitude of organic arrangements to create a unique and naturally inspired puzzle.
