Ingredients

  • 1 Cake Mix (follow instructions on cake mix used)
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 piece large eggs
  • 1 White frosting
  • 1 Red food dye

Instructions

Instructions:

  • Gather all the ingredients and utensils needed.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. While doing so, grease the bottom and the sides of a round pan with butter, cooking spray, or vegetable oil so the cake will not stick to the pan when ready to serve.
  • Add a thin layer of flour to the greased parts of the pan. You can dump out any excess flour.
  • Mix the cake ingredients in a large bowl. Put the cake mix into the bowl and add 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 3 large eggs. Mix the ingredients with either a mixer on medium speed, or beat vigorously by hand. Do either one for only 2 minutes.
  • Pour the mix into the prepared pan and place it into the oven to bake. Bake for 24-29 minutes. The cake is ready when a toothpick is inserted into the cake and comes back out clean, meaning no batter is on the toothpick.
  • Take the cake out of the oven when it is done. Set the cake aside and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.

Frosting Instructions:

  • Take the cake out of the pan carefully and place it on a cake board. The top is where the cake rose up, causing an uneven layer. If you want a 3-D baseball, leave the bump. If not, cut off the bump that was created so you get a nice, even layer, and you should now have a round, flat cake.
  • Take a small amount of frosting and apply a very thin, even layer on top and the sides of the cake. This will help make decorating the cake easier. Put the cake into the refrigerator for about a half-hour to cool.
  • Separate the frosting into two bowls while the cake is cooling. Get about 3/4 of the frosting into one bowl and leave it as white. Get the other 1/4 into another bowl. This is going to be the frosting you’ll need to dye red.
  • Take food coloring and add about 4 drops to the smaller amount of frosting. Mix it very well until your frosting is a dark red color.
  • Take the cake out of the refrigerator and apply white frosting all over it. Evenly coat both top and sides of the cake, making sure to smooth out frosting along the way. Once finished, place it back in refrigerator to cool.
  • Get a piping bag with a small round tip or cut very bottom of bag to create small hole if you’d prefer. Place red frosting into piping bag.
  • Take cake out and start to draw two curved lines (vertically) with toothpick on opposite sides of it.
