Baseball Cake

The first time I laid eyes on a baseball cake, it was love at first sight. It perfectly blends two of my passions: baking and baseball. I remember the excitement in my fingertips as I prepared to take a swing at making my very own round baseball cake.

The glass bowl became my canvas, the cake batter my paint. I filled the bowl, carefully smoothing out any lumps or bumps, a meticulous process akin to preparing the baseball field for a game. The oven worked its magic, transforming the liquid batter into a perfect dome as if the baseball gods had shaped it themselves.

Once the cake had cooled, the real fun began. I grabbed the white frosting, spreading it over the cake as if I were laying fresh snow over a baseball field after a winter storm. The coconut flakes with red food coloring came next, expertly arranged in the signature V pattern of a baseball’s stitches. My heart swelled with pride as I looked at my creation. A perfect baseball cake, ready to be devoured.

This baseball cake wasn’t just a dessert but a testament to my love for the game. The meticulous stitching with coconut flakes and red food coloring was not just decoration; it symbolized the stitches on a baseball, the synecdoche of the game. The roundness of the cake represented not just the ball but the full circle of a baseball game, from the first pitch to the last home run.

Of course, there are other ways to hit a home run with a baseball cake. You can find many baseball cake ideas online, from pops to decorations. And if you don’t want to make your own, stores like Walmart and Publix have been known to carry baseball-themed cakes.

But there’s something special about making your baseball cake from scratch. It’s not just a treat; it’s a labor of love, a celebration of the game, and a testament to your baking skills. So, the next time you’re in the mood for something sweet and baseball-related, try it. You won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cake Mix (follow instructions on cake mix used)
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 piece large eggs
  • 1 White frosting
  • 1 Red food dye

Instructions

Instructions:

  • Gather all the ingredients and utensils needed.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. While doing so, grease the bottom and the sides of a round pan with butter, cooking spray, or vegetable oil so the cake will not stick to the pan when ready to serve.
  • Add a thin layer of flour to the greased parts of the pan. You can dump out any excess flour.
  • Mix the cake ingredients in a large bowl. Put the cake mix into the bowl and add 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 3 large eggs. Mix the ingredients with either a mixer on medium speed, or beat vigorously by hand. Do either one for only 2 minutes.
  • Pour the mix into the prepared pan and place it into the oven to bake. Bake for 24-29 minutes. The cake is ready when a toothpick is inserted into the cake and comes back out clean, meaning no batter is on the toothpick.
  • Take the cake out of the oven when it is done. Set the cake aside and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.

Frosting Instructions:

  • Take the cake out of the pan carefully and place it on a cake board. The top is where the cake rose up, causing an uneven layer. If you want a 3-D baseball, leave the bump. If not, cut off the bump that was created so you get a nice, even layer, and you should now have a round, flat cake.
  • Take a small amount of frosting and apply a very thin, even layer on top and the sides of the cake. This will help make decorating the cake easier. Put the cake into the refrigerator for about a half-hour to cool.
  • Separate the frosting into two bowls while the cake is cooling. Get about 3/4 of the frosting into one bowl and leave it as white. Get the other 1/4 into another bowl. This is going to be the frosting you’ll need to dye red.
  • Take food coloring and add about 4 drops to the smaller amount of frosting. Mix it very well until your frosting is a dark red color.
  • Take the cake out of the refrigerator and apply white frosting all over it. Evenly coat both top and sides of the cake, making sure to smooth out frosting along the way. Once finished, place it back in refrigerator to cool.
  • Get a piping bag with a small round tip or cut very bottom of bag to create small hole if you’d prefer. Place red frosting into piping bag.
  • Take cake out and start to draw two curved lines (vertically) with toothpick on opposite sides of it.
