Classic Tomato Sauce
This classic tomato sauce is a versatile base for many dishes, from pasta to pizza. The longer it simmers, the richer and more flavorful it becomes.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil  Â
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano  Â
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil  Â
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Sauté the Aromatics:
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Â Â
- Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
- Combine Ingredients:
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to the pot.
- Stir to combine.
- Simmer and Season:
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours.
- The longer you simmer, the richer the flavor will be.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
- Serve:
- Serve the sauce immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Â Â
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving, if desired.
Tips:
- Fresh Tomatoes: If you have fresh tomatoes in season, you can roast them for a deeper, smoky flavor.
- Herbs: Feel free to experiment with different herbs like thyme, rosemary, or fennel seeds.
- Heat: Adjust the heat level by increasing or decreasing the amount of red pepper flakes.
- Thickness: If the sauce is too thin, simmer it uncovered for longer to reduce the liquid. If it’s too thick, add a little water or broth.  Â
Enjoy your homemade tomato sauce with your favorite pasta or pizza or as a dipping sauce for bread!
