Classic Tomato Sauce

Classic Tomato Sauce

This classic tomato sauce is a versatile base for many dishes, from pasta to pizza. The longer it simmers, the richer and more flavorful it becomes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the Aromatics:
    • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
    • Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
    • Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to the pot.
    • Stir to combine.
  3. Simmer and Season:
    • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours.
    • The longer you simmer, the richer the flavor will be.
    • Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the sauce immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
    • Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving, if desired.

Tips:

  • Fresh Tomatoes: If you have fresh tomatoes in season, you can roast them for a deeper, smoky flavor.
  • Herbs: Feel free to experiment with different herbs like thyme, rosemary, or fennel seeds.
  • Heat: Adjust the heat level by increasing or decreasing the amount of red pepper flakes.
  • Thickness: If the sauce is too thin, simmer it uncovered for longer to reduce the liquid. If it’s too thick, add a little water or broth.

Enjoy your homemade tomato sauce with your favorite pasta or pizza or as a dipping sauce for bread!
