Reed palm / Chamaedorea seifrizii

Characteristics

Chamaedorea seifrizii spreads and multiplies and will endure more light than others, while microspadix endures colder conditions and can produce bright red berries late fall.

Evergreen palms to 10 feet or so, with pale green leaves of fine texture. Inconspicuous unisexual flowers on stems up to 12 inches produce berry-like seeds on female plants.

Recommended for outdoors in South Florida only, on the shady north side of houses, chamaedorea palms are often grown in containers indoors.

Chamaedorea elegans is usually single-trunked, while erumpens, also known as bamboo palm, is a clump-grower that requires full shade and no frost.

Growing tips

Shade is necessary for health and leaf color. Not tolerant of salt, these small palms prefer soil with fibrous leaf mold and above average fertility.

Protection from frost and freezing temperatures are necessary for these tropicals.
